This is the oldest medieval castle in Sweden

Glimmingehus is the best preserved medieval castle in Scandinavia. The castle is located in the southern part of the country and is open daily for tours. The building dates from 1499 and has stood the test of time well. During a guided tour you will hear everything about the history of the castle, you can take a walk in the castle garden or test old swords, arrows and bows and pickaxes.

“Step back in time within the walls of Glimmingehus Castle – an awe-inspiring fortress providing an authentic taste of medieval Scandinavia.”

The Castle was built by Danish knight Jens Holgersen Ulfstand in 1499 as a defensive stronghold for the lands he owned. The castle was designed to stand against hostile attacks and a changing regional landscape, ensuring the safety of Ulfstand’s/its residents. Its strategic location near the southern coast of Sweden made it a bustling center for trade and commerce.

Adventure at the Swedish castle

Glimmingehus has got its name from the gleaming lake that existed on the site where knight Jens Holgersen Ulfstand in 1499 had begun to erect this mighty and impassable castle – which today is said to be the best preserved medieval castle in the Nordic countries.

Glimmingehus in southeastern Scania is the best preserved medieval castle in the Nordic region.

Glimmingehus invites you to adventure and a journey back to the time when men were still fighting with swords. There are also numerous activities for the whole family throughout the year. The Middle Ages and the knights are the common thread for all activities in Glimmingehus, ranging from a witch’s school to jousting. In June the castle organizes the popular family event “the day of 10,000 knights”. There, knights show their skills with swords and lance to the knights-to-be and their parents. Children can even shoot with bow and arrow, or how about wearing a real armor?

“Constructed in the 15th century, Glimmingehus Castle remains a testament to medieval Scandinavian life.”

The picturesque castle grounds provide a serene setting for a leisurely walk, allowing visitors to explore the various architectural elements up close. The well-maintained gardens boast an impressive variety of flora and fauna, adding to the castle’s charm. The moat, which once protected the castle on all four sides, now serves as a peaceful oasis for local wildlife, including ducks, frogs, and fish.
